Technical Down Hill Mountain Biking
Relaxing your upper torso is vital when riding mountain bikes down hill. Most riders will grip harder and tighten their shoulder blades as the rocky trail gets steeper, yet this is in fact counter intuitive. They will often brake too hard and prematurely. Breaking is obviously necessary, as hitting obstacles at speed can throw you off your line and slow your momentum.
The trick is a balance of a relaxed posture and controlled braking. Limiting the use of the front brake when approaching rocks, will allow you to control the front wheel up and over the obstacle. This will give you the extra momentum to keep you on your line.
Good mountain bike downhill riders don’t brake too severely. Fight against the urge to brake at all if you are travelling slow. Going that little bit faster will assist you in going over an obstacles, and the ride will be a lot smoother, especially on really steep terrain.
There are exceptions to not braking too hard, and that is when executing very tight turns. It is essential to slow down considerably to make the small radius turning circle. If you are good, you can hop into the turn. Things like this, take a lot of practice.
Downhill mountain biking is extreme and can be one of the most dangerous aspects of mountain biking. For beginners, down hilling is not the ideal, as it requires a fair amount of practice to become competent.
However knowing the correct techniques and doing the practice, technical downhill mountain biking is something you could definitely aim for, as it can be extremely exhilarating.
